This is especially important when it comes to your daily dietary habits and if you follow any strict diets like veganism or vegetarianism. For patients who are vegan, our general dentist in Waldorf, MD wants to ensure you are receiving all of the necessary vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay strong and protect your teeth, and we’ve got tips on how to do it!

Vitamins & Minerals to Protect Your Teeth

How to Keep Your Teeth Strong Even When You’re VeganNo matter the diet you follow, it’s important to eat plenty of plant-based foods. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is best for the health of your body and teeth. However, whether you practice a vegan diet, a vegetarian diet, or a diet that includes meat, it’s important to consume all of the necessary vitamins for strong, healthy teeth. These vitamins include:

Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 protects against gum disease and tooth loss, but it is naturally found in animal products. In order to get a sufficient amount of B12 on a vegan diet, you should consume fortified yeast, plant-based milk, and cereals. You can also take a daily B12 supplement.

Calcium: Calcium is key to healthy enamel and fighting off tooth decay. Foods rich in calcium include beans, legumes, almonds, spinach, kale, collard greens, and broccoli.

Potassium: Potassium helps control the levels of acid in your blood which will, in turn, protect the enamel on your teeth from eroding. To ensure you are consuming enough potassium, eat foods like avocados, bananas, potatoes, prunes, sweet potatoes, swiss chard, and tomatoes.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D helps your body adequately absorb calcium. Foods high in vitamin D include fortified cereals and portobello mushrooms.

Vitamin K: Vitamin K helps your body heal from infection and stay healthy. It’s important to consume foods like broccoli, kale, collard greens, brussel sprouts, spinach, and parsley.
