Dr. Christian Johnson Answers Your Dental Questions

How often should I see a dentist?

Both our dentist and the American Dental Association recommends seeing a dentist at least two times per year in order to get a check-up and a professional cleaning.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

If you believe that you have a dental emergency, please call our office immediately so that you can see our Waldorf, MD dentist as soon as possible. If your dental emergency occurs during our regular office hours, we’ll be glad to work you into our schedule. If it occurs after our hours, over the weekend, or over the holidays, please call our office for the doctor’s emergency contact number.

What kind of toothbrush should I use?

Adults should use a small-to-medium sized toothbrush that has soft-to-medium bristles. Make sure that the head of the brush is small enough so that it can reach and brush all areas of the mouth thoroughly. People with sensitive teeth can benefit from using more gentle, soft-bristled toothbrushes. Children should use small toothbrushes with soft bristles.

How often should I replace my toothbrush?

The American Dental Association recommends that you replace your toothbrush every three or four months. Each time you use your toothbrush, the bristles will become more worn and its cleaning effectiveness decreases. Depending on your oral health, it may be a good idea to replace your toothbrush even more often. Children’s toothbrushes will also need to be replaced more often.

Is an electric toothbrush more effective than a manual toothbrush?

Actually, manual toothbrushes are just as effective as electric toothbrushes. However, if you have trouble using a manual toothbrush effectively, an electric toothbrush may be more comfortable and easier to use.

Should I brush or floss first?

It doesn’t really matter which you choose to do first as long as you’re brushing and flossing thoroughly. However, when you floss before you brush, it will enable the fluoride in your toothpaste to better reach the areas between your teeth.

Is one type of toothpaste better than the others?

No. Our dental team just recommends that you use a toothpaste that contains fluoride and also has the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Fluoride will help strengthen and rebuild tooth structure and also prevent dental decay. The Seal of Acceptance means that it has been assessed and approved for both safety and effectiveness.

Are payment plans available for my dental treatment?

Yes. As your trusted Waldorf, MD dentist, we’re glad to accept most major credit cards and many different types of dental insurance. We’ll even process your insurance claim for you upon receipt of your co-payment. Visit our Financial page to learn more about our payment options.
